In this lively animated Skype video conversation, interviewer and Community Manager Michael Mintz of Connected Pulse interviews Larry Bodine about business development with online technology.
(Turn up your speakers - the volume is low when Larry speaks.)
Topics covered:
- The best advice for unhappy lawyers is "Don't let your clients pick you." It's much better to decide whom you want to work with, and target these people as clients.
- You can use technology to meet new clients. Ultimately the best way to keep a client relationship going is in person, but sometimes that's not possible, especially if they're on another continent. But you can join an online social network, accept invitations, join a group and get involved, and request introductions.
- Lawyers are already integrating Web 2.0 into their daily work. More conversations are taking place in online social networks than on email. Lawyers should go where the conversations are. If you're fishing, go where the fish are.
- For lawyers who are computer-shy, Larry recommends Martindale Connected. The fact is that Baby Boomers are no longer the largest generation in history. Today it's the Net Generation -- people born from 1997 to the present. They grew up texting, using Facebook, and playing video games. Larry says it really behooves senior lawyers to learn the new method of conversation. You can never a reach a point where you stop learning and say, "I'm going to stick with the tool that my grandfather did."
- Once your firm has a written social media policy, then senior lawyers will be more comfortable with it.
